- Jason Bateman had a “meltdown” while trying to record an episode of the “SmartLess” podcast.
- His computer was down when he was trying to record with Matthew McConaughey.
- In the latest episode of the podcast, he said: “It’s not one of my proudest moments.”
Actor Jason Bateman once had a “complete meltdown” in front of Matthew McConaughey when he had technical difficulties during the recording of his “SmartLess” podcast.
At least that’s how his co-host Will Arnett described it on Monday’s episode of the podcast, in which, according to Arnett’s recollections, Bateman, Arnett and a third co-host, Sean Hayes, finally interviewed McConaughey after a botched attempt at least two years ago.
The premise of “SmartLess” revolves around three co-hosts who take turns choosing a mystery guest each week, and on Monday, McConaughey joined the gang to talk about his new book.
But before the interview got underway, the stars recalled the first time they tried to record a podcast with the Oscar winner, which had to be canceled due to Bateman’s computer problems.
Arnett then played an audio recording of Bateman’s reaction to the technical difficulties, as Bateman sheepishly said, “Oh no, please don’t use playback.”
In the audio, someone can be heard explaining that Bateman was having problems with his computer before the actor rejoins the call.
“I can’t see it in the audio here, so let’s just cancel it. Let’s reschedule it. I’m in total fucking pain,” Bateman can be heard saying.
After hearing the cohost throw in the towel, McConaughey starts laughing uncontrollably, seemingly exasperating Bateman. It should be noted that according to the show’s premise, Bateman was unaware that McConaughey was the planned guest for the episode.
“Who the hell is that? Great, that’s helpful,” Bateman says in the clip.
McConaughey can then be heard saying, “Let me tell you what I’ve heard here for the last 30 minutes,” before giving his own version of Bateman’s meltdown.
“We have to restart here. His iPad was cloned and then it was wiped right before the dog peed on it, so I have to restart one more time,” McConaughey says, imitating the cohost.
Listening back to the clip, Bateman said on Monday’s podcast, “It’s not one of my proudest moments.”
“The worst part is when I hear someone laughing, they think it’s Will or Sean, and I’m like, ‘Who did that? That’s not helpful,'” Bateman recalled. “And then I slammed the laptop, took the ball and went home like a pig.
“I was so angry,” the actor continued. “I think you may have told me he was a big guest so don’t screw it up. I just knew I was going to screw it up.”
Speaking directly to McConaughey, Bateman added, “Look, Matthew, I can’t thank you enough for coming back after that absolute wipeout.”
