NASA managed to record the sounds of a black hole that lies at the heart of a cluster of galaxies.
You might think that black holes don’t make any noise because sound can’t travel through space, and normally you’d be right because sound definitely can’t travel through a vacuum.
However, according to NASA, a galaxy cluster like the one in the constellation Perseus is enveloped in enough gas that sound waves can travel through it.
This is quite useful for astronomers who have identified sound waves from the cluster and subjected them to something called “sonification”, which means using non-speech sound to convey information or provide a new perspective on the data.
However, much work has gone into making Perseus’ sound waves audible to the human ear, as the sound waves are 144 quadrillion (that’s 15 zeros) and 288 quadrillion times higher than their original frequency to be within the range of human hearing.
With audible sound waves from the black hole at the center of the constellation, you can now have an incredible chance of hearing sounds from 250 million light years away, which is pretty damn cool.
These create “light echoes” and experts can convert them into tones that the human ear can hear, so the black hole can become a musical instrument even as it plays itself by emitting waves.
Some of them can be 60 billion times the mass of the Sun, located at the heart of our solar system.
There are anywhere from 10 million to a billion black holes in our own galaxy, the Milky Way, although only one of ours is truly monstrous in size.
However, even a small one would be enough to spoil everyone’s day if it was close enough to our planet.
If a small black hole were close enough to Earth, it would be powerful enough to tear off “big chunks” of the planet in a process known as “spaghettiation,” meaning that those big chunks would get longer and thinner the closer they get. was approaching Earth. Black hole.
